Events: Rockets & Rascals Hell of the South
Open your calendars and mark down 4 September as the day you’ll want to be in Poole, Dorset to have a big, fun day on the trails, no matter what kind of off-road bike you fancy.
The Hell of the South is a 70-kilometer event that takes place on varied terrain. Based on the Hell of the West event in Devon, the course will include mostly off-road sections, but some paved bits on quiet country roads will link them all together. The route is appropriate for cyclocross rigs and/or mountain bikes, and there’s a special category for vintage mountain bikes — pre-1995 bikes. “These bikes should be as close to their original specification as possible and in the spirit of the event.”
Organizers of Hell of the South are quick to point out that this is not a race, but it is a timed event. There are also some other unique features on the route. “There’ll be a few ‘Special Tests’ along the way too, with a reward for those brave enough, or skilled enough, to complete them.” No prizes will be awarded for winning, but there will be medals. It’s quite an aggressive route, and beginners should consider spectating rather than participating. The word “hell” is in the name for a reason.
While some participants will be awarded medals, everyone will enjoy a post-ride beer when they finish up back at Rockets & Rascals. If you aren’t aware, Rockets & Rascals is a cool ‘bicycle emporium and cycling café’ that offers up bikes and caffeine!
